Maha Shivaratri

Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi

Maha Shivaratri, the sacred night of Lord Shiva, falls on Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi (Feb–Mar), observed with fasting, prayers, and Rudrabhishekam for divine blessings.

Maha Shivaratri, one of the most revered festivals in Hinduism, is celebrated in honor of Lord Shiva. This auspicious occasion, known as “The Great Night of Shiva,” falls on the 14th night of the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) in the month of Phalguna or Magha, as per the Hindu lunar calendar. Devotees across India and the world observe this day with great devotion, fasting, and prayers.

On this auspicious day, Sri Balagurunadheeswara Swamy is adorned with special flower decorations, and Rudrabhishekam is performed by Vedic scholars, enhancing the divine atmosphere.

Rituals and Celebrations

Maha Shivaratri is observed with immense dedication and devotion through various rituals, including:

Fasting (Vrat)

Devotees observe a strict fast on Maha Shivaratri, refraining from consuming grains and certain foods. Some people observe a Nirjala Vrat (fasting without water), while others consume fruits, milk, and non-grain foods. Fasting is believed to cleanse the body and mind, helping devotees focus on prayers and meditation.

Night-Long Vigil (Jagran)

Staying awake all night, known as Jagran, is a significant aspect of Maha Shivaratri. Devotees engage in bhajans (devotional songs), kirtans, and reading scriptures related to Lord Shiva. Temples remain open throughout the night, allowing people to offer their prayers and seek blessings.

Rudrabhishek (Shiva Abhishekam)

Performing Rudrabhishek (ritualistic bathing of the Shiva Lingam) is a crucial ritual on Maha Shivaratri. The Lingam is bathed with water, milk, honey, ghee, and other sacred substances while chanting Vedic mantras such as the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra and the Rudram Chamakam.
